A good way to make your water garden look beautiful is to fill it with aquatic pond plants. You can purchase plants from your local pond supplier or aquatic store, or even online.
One of the most popular plants is the water lily. There are over 70 different types of water lily and their species are put into two categories. You can either buy hardy lilies or the tropical type. Tropical water lilies flower all day and night but the hardy type only flower during daylight. You can only buy blue flowers in the form of the tropical type but Indiana, Comanche, James Brydon and Virginia are all types of the hardy variety. Panama Pacific, August Koch and Shirley Bryne are all examples of tropical lilies. Other popular aquatic plants are water lotuses and irises.
Special care should be taken before planting aquatic plants. Read the instructions on the labels before purchasing as some plants can only grow in shallow water and prefer shade. Examples of this include the sweet flag and umbrella palm. Your pond should not be more than two or three feet if you are planning on keeping these plants.
Oxygenating plants help to keep your water clean and crystal clear. They are not very attractive plants but all the same, have a job to do. They need to grow under the water and because of this, hardly ever bloom. They convert carbon dioxide found in pond water into oxygen which is great for providing your pond with rich oxygen needed to keep your other plants alive and also your fish, if you keep any. Oxygenating pond plants also reduce the growth of algae so will play a big part in keeping your water clear and healthy. You won’t experience unpleasant odours that form when algae starts to take over a pond. These plants also provide shelter and shade for your fish and give frogs and tadpoles a place to live.
A very popular oxygenating plant is called Cabomba. This plant will grow well as long as it is placed where it can receive sunlight. Another alternative is vallisneria, also known as jungle val or eelgrass. This plant grows well in every type of climate and will grow in either sun or shade. It has very big leaves however, and can be invasive once introduced so if you have a small pond, trim it regularly
